Each year, Onam is celebrated to commemorate the return of King Mahabali back to the Earth. According to mythology, the legend goes that King Mahabali was well-known for his strength and power. Believing in him and his power, the devas teamed up against him in order to end Mahabali’s rule.
According to Wikipedia, God sent Lord Vishnu back to the Earth in the form of a dwarf Brahmin who carried Mahabali into the realm of the dead. Vamanan inquired of Mahabali to give him 3 feet of ground in exchange for his request from the king Mahabali. Within the initial two feet Vamana was able to measure the whole universe and left no place for his third foot to go. Mahabali gave his head to put his third foot to make the dream total.
In the end the Lord Vishnu granted the King’s only request, i.e. to travel to his country as well as his inhabitants once a year. The festival is known by the name of Onam in Kerala each year.’
